Rules for working from home

Author: Edgars | Filed under: DailyStuff

Me and my colleges do a great deal following contemporary business format – we work at the home office (not “from home”, but “at the home office”). I ain’t gonna tell now about cost savings on traveling expenses and office space rent but despite even “present economic situation” it is possible to save even more. I’ve been working in all kinds of offices – cubicles, open-space, closed space, outside space, free air, etc. But none of them gives that freedom for creation as home office. Of course, some rules must be applied since I’ve been hearing around “och, it must be so hard for your self control”. Nope. Opposite. I feel free and liberated from leaving my home ar 7:00, spending 3 or 4 hours daily stucked in traffic jams, stinky public transport and spending a great deal of my time with people I don’t know, don’t want to know and will never ever meet again (read – other passengers). I drink whatever drink I want (not suppressed by office brown dirty liquid they call “coffee”). I listen to whatever music I want no matter how loud it is. I can take a walk around the forest in the middle of the day to clear my head or even work not from 9am to 6pm but from 3pm to 11pm. And no, i don’t miss interpersonal communication since Skype gives me all the communication I need. And what is the most fabulous – how many of  cubicle slaves can enjoy fine home made lunch in front of TV watching favorite TV show?

Even though we are a team (small team, but still), some important rules must be followed. Just around the time i had my own thoughts on this, I found an article in Inc.com magazine making point on essential thingies that slightly touch everyone having a home office.

  1. Language is important. Tell people you “work out of my home office” or that you “work from home.”
  2. Some people like to dress for work, even though they never set foot outside their houses.
  3. Talk to someone from the office at least once a day.
  4. Gossiping, Web surfing, popping out to do a little shopping at lunch.
  5. If you have children, explain that when your door is closed they should not disturb you.
  6. Larks will love working from 4 AM to 1 PM; owls from 3 PM to midnight.
  7. At our house we have three phone numbers: one for the family, one for the kids, and one for my work calls.
  8. Stay caffeinated.
