Only a year ago i first started to work permanently on two monitors. Now i cannot imagine my life squeezed inside one 21″ box. i need at least twice more!
I would like to have 3 monitor system, but unfortunately iMac supports only 1 extra monitor so i have to deal with 2 monitor system.
Some work i do is also related to developing websites so having two OS systems is a must. Those who work on Mac knows that there are at 3 ways to launch windows apps on Mac OS X – bootcamp (which sux because its not possible to run simultaneously both systems), Parallels (nice thingy, but not for development because it is getting too overcrowded) and wine (which … no comments).
So my exit from this situation is… having a 2 monitor Mac system + windows box that goes mostly as a media/games center but once in a while is my development environment on windows system. And least but not least i have 5 years old Dell laptop that is a testing device for testing webpages as an “Average Joe”.
An this is not the pickiness of spoiled developer. There are at least two important documents saying that a developer MUST HAVE at least two monitors:

And for me all together comes in quite handy despite having 3 monitors, 2 keyboards+mice (because of two different systems) and a laptop:
Mac Monitor 1 (Development environment):
- Cellfex
- Zend Studio
- Coda
Mac Monitor 2:
- Web Browser (FireFox for jira, confluence, FirePHP and FireBug and other stuff)
- Debug screen for ZendStudio
- Skype
PC box:
- Media center (spotify, movies, music)
- Network disk (kind of local file server)
- Mails
- Calendar & ToDo
- Phone Sync (Shame on HTC for not supporting Mac OS X!!!)
- Web Browser (Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, Chrome)
- Gaming central (Everybody needs to relax once in a while)
Average Joe Laptop:
- IE7
- OpenOffice
- Traveling device (Because is All-in-one: tomtom, mp3 player, portable dvd and huuuuge memorycard for photos)
Now i want to hear Oleg saying “so what, i can do all the same on my 15″ laptop”…
And alltogeather it doesnt look too bad.
Here is a full size of what i had on my desktop a minute ago . As you see, development tools are on right side, browser and debugger is on the left left. Sorting apps out in a whirl is a handy invention that i unfortunately didn’ t patent yet. Sorting apps in whirl makes it easy to switch through all of them because for every app there will always be some uncovered edge that you can click on and switch to it. In the same time you dont have to split screen space equally for every app.
