By the name of upcoming Mac OS X “facelift” – Lion you can surely say that this might be the last OS X edition. Really – if there were panthers, leopards, tigers, then there is no future after Lion – the king of the beasts.
I always liked reasonable naming conventions and code names of which the imho best has Ubuntu with all those alphabetic animals.
Back to Mac OS X and newest buzzword that will float around for at least next couple of years – Mac OS X 10.7 Lion which “arrives summer 2011″. Just like snow leopard, also Lion in my opinion is just a visual facelift and some thingies in addition to make life easier. but really – why wait 10 years to come up with something revoutionary when you can just keep up with the mainstream just by releasing a new verion every couple of years. Thats what i found out from Mac OS X Lion Preview on Apple Special Event 10/20/10.
So what we have – a new operating system whos most important breathtaking features are:
- multitouch (huh? i use mouse 99% whereever there is at least flat surface)
- Appstore (yea whatever. one thing i liked is a policy change – one app you buy works on all your own personal macs)
- home app screen (naa, not interested, i am pro-clean desktop. actually it is just a way to organize apps that can be done also now by making shortcurts)
- full screen apps – yea, cool innovation that MS Windows kind of had around since the very first version. thats one of the things i missed when i switched from windows to mac os – ability to dive into software so all screen belong to it.
- mission control – eeee…. same expose, but a bit different? i never used SnowLeo “upgraded” expose docking features anyway.
- autosave (…. come on… …. autosave?….)
anyway. i am more interested in what comes after Lion – the Mac OS XI branch. So congratulations to Apple for becoming more beautiful. But if you are going to go “Cloud” and remove file access, i will cry. and move to linux. It is hard to imagine apple taking care of customers needs since Apple is notorious for telling us what to do instead of asking us what do we want to do. I’ve spent 3 years trying to convince hardcode windows users that mac is as good development system as linux or windows, so please dont you dare ruin that. i already god my daily dosage of stress by reading Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 and 10.5 Update 8 Release Notes.
Java Deprecation
As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated.
This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X. The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products.
You must be kidding, right? Maybe i don’t even want future to come.
